On Monday, March 1st  to Friday, March 5th; students will be taking part in Virtual Engineering Week. Many of our students will be at home, but it is our goal to make this week both educational and fun.

Engineering is part of our every day lives, from the electricity supplied to our houses, to the car/ bike /footwear we take to school to the machines & technology that test & manufacture vaccines being currently administered throughout the world.

Mr Mc Namara, has planned a busy week filled with quizzes, competitions, talks, etc. to inform us all about Engineering all around us. Keep an eye on Twitter and on this webpage for updates next week.

PODCAST

Podcast - My Engineering Journey

Mr Mc Namara discusses his passion for Engineering

As part of Engineering Week, DCU have invited us to attend some webinars;

Monday 10am : Spotlight on Biomedical Engineering (5th years)

Monday 11 am: From Fitbits to Smart Toothbrushes: How smart devices are changing our lives (2nd years)

Tuesday 11am: How to design a Mobile Robot (1st years)

Engineering Week: Design Challenge (1st Years)

Paper Challenge – Support Device

Design & build a support device that will hold a mobile phone or calculator a minimum of 20mm / 2cm off of a flat surface.

You can may only use a maximum of 2 sheets of paper and nothing else to construct your support device.

Photos or videos of your successful attempts should be sent to diarmuid.mcnamara@rosmini.ie. Top prize will go to the most inventive creation.

Engineering Week: Design Challenge (2nd Years)

Renewable Energy Challenge

Engineers don’t always have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to using technology. Hundreds of years ago (before engines) waterwheels and windmills were used to produce mechanical energy. We are now using this technology today to produce clean electricity.

You have a choice between Challenge 1 or Challenge 2

Challenge 1: Design & model a wind or water turbine in a 3D model that demonstrates how it works

Challenge 2: Design & build a wind or water turbine from recycled household materials that demonstrates how it works

Photos or videos of your successful attempts should be sent to diarmuid.mcnamara@rosmini.ie. Top prize will go to the most inventive creation.

Engineering Week: Design Challenge (All Years)

Best example of Engineering

Engineering is in us all; from ancient people who discovered that tools made from rocks made life easier for them to current technology that is saving lives on a daily basis.

Your mission should you choose to except it is to give me your opinion on what is the best example of Engineering. It can be something very simple to something that only a genius can explain. Justify your answer with fact based evidence, pictures/ illustrations, etc. Please don’t copy an answer from a book, internet, etc., as it MUST be YOUR opinion.

Send your work to diarmuid.mcnamara@rosmini.ie, prizes will be awarded to the best piece of work/works.

Ask an Engineer

Send any Engineering questions that you might have here and Mr Mc Namara will forward them onto a relevant Engineer (Engineers from the working world, university lecturers, previous students and maybe he can try to answer them too.
